There’s no keeping a “Chuck” fan down.
An Oregon man has legally changed his name from the mundane Douglas Allen Smith Jr. to the more awesome-sounding “Captain Awesome,” in honor of a character from NBC’s fantasy spy series “Chuck.”
The 27-year-old unemployed cabinetmaker picked his new moniker in homage to the nickname given to the character of Dr. Devon Woodcomb (played by Ryan McPartlin), who got it himself because “everything he does is awesome,” as Chuck (Zachary Levi) once noted.
The newly minted Awesome’s name change petition was granted last month by a Lane County Circuit Court judge, who also let him change his official signature to a glyph: a right-pointing arrow, a smiley face and a left-pointing arrow.
“I just thought it was really funny that Devon’s father always called him Captain Awesome, because ‘a poor nickname builds good character,’ ” Awesome told the Register-Guard.
With “Chuck” on the verge of being canceled every season — it’s now in its fourth — it’s possible that Captain Awesome’s name might just stick around longer than the series will.
